The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992-1996)
The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles is a tv-show that ran in 1992-1996, showcasing a series of adventures from the early life of Indiana Jones. George Lucas was both the writer and the executive-producer of the show.
The show was chiefly aimed at children and teenagers, and included both a young adult “Indy” aged 16-21 played by Sean Patrick Flanery and (to a lesser degree) “Indy” as an 8-10 year old child played by Corey Carrier. Initially, the show followed a formula where each episode started with an elderly Indiana Jones, now in his 90s and played by George Hall, would introduce the story by telling an anecdote. This element was later dropped.
Many impactful historical events and people of the early 20th century were included in the storyline for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles – all seen through the prism of Indiana Jones´ life.
A majority of the episodes is focused on the adventures of 16-21 year old Indy. He starts out as a soldier in the Belgian Army during WWI, before becoming an intelligence officer and spy seconded to French intelligence.
The episodes about 8-10 year old Indy show us how he travels around the world with his parents, as he father is carrying out a lecture tour in 1908-1910.
Examples of character information that we learned about Indiana Jones by watching the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles:
- He was born July 1, 1899
- His middle name is Walton. (This is George Lucas´ middle name.)
- Indy had an infant sister called Suzie who died from a fever.
- Indiana Jones will eventually have a daugther and grandchildren.
- The elderly Indiana Jones wears an eyepatch. It is surmissed that his right eye was damaged somehow between the events taking place in 1969 and the early 1990s.
In 1999, the episodes were released for VHS and DVD. They differ a bit from the tv-show, because George Lucas removed all the introductions and epilogues by George Hall, and also moved the episodes around to show Indiana Jones´ life in chronological order. The VHS and DVD version was released under the title The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones.
